The NFL’s testing process for non-fibrous metal and non-metallic substances is not set up for drug testing.
The league said Thursday that it will not be testing for synthetic cannabinoids or synthetic opioids.
The decision comes amid a spike in overdoses and deaths from synthetic opioids, which are mostly used to treat pain.
It comes after the NFL said in October it was testing for opioids in the NFL Players Association’s anti-narcotics task force, but not testing for nonfibers.
The NFL said Thursday it would be conducting its own internal investigation into the NFLPA’s decision to test for nonmetal substances.
